Evolution of Computers

ENIAC stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator.

These computers were way faster than Mark-1. Increase in speed was result of invention of first electronic valve or vacuum tube.

ENIAC was developed by John Mauchly and J.P. Eakert of Pennsylvania University.

Features of ENIAC

  1. It was faster than Mark-1
  2. It used vacuum tube. ENIAC contained 17468 vacuum tubes.
  3. The weight of this machine was 27 ton.
  4. 180 sq feet of space was required to install it.
  5. 150 kilowatt electricity was needed for running it.

Drawback of ENIAC

  • Very large and heavy in size
  • Required lot of space for installation
  • Needed huge amount of electricity.
